Kholmsk, Port town on southwestern coast of Sakhalin Island, Russia
Kholmsk is a port town on the southwestern coast of Sakhalin Island, facing the Strait of Tartary with waters that stay ice-free all year. The town serves as the main maritime link between the island and the Russian mainland, with ferries running regularly to the port of Vanino.
The settlement was founded in 1870 as a Russian military post and later came under Japanese administration after the Russo-Japanese War, when it was known as Maoka. Soviet forces took control in 1945, and the town grew steadily into the trading port it is today.
The Natural Science Museum on Morskaya Street displays collections from Russian maritime research, showing how the sea has shaped local life and identity. Visitors can explore how fishing and shipping remain central to daily routines and local traditions here.
The ferry crossing from Vanino on the mainland takes roughly one night, and passengers should be prepared for rough sea conditions. Foreign travelers need to go through additional customs checks because the town falls within a designated border zone.
Kholmsk is one of the few Russian ports that can operate all year without icebreakers, which makes it especially valuable for cargo traffic. Despite sitting on a strategically important strait, it remains little known outside Russia.
