The Naryn-kala citadel features stone walls reaching 20 meters in height and extending 700 meters along the Caspian Sea passage.
Persian Shah Khosrow I ordered the construction of these fortifications in the 6th century to protect against nomadic tribes from the northern steppes.
The fortress contains the oldest mosque in Russia, which has maintained its religious function for over 1300 years within the Derbent complex.
The fortification system includes the citadel, twin parallel walls connecting to the Caspian Sea, and mountain walls stretching toward the Caucasus.
An underground Christian church from the 4th century was later converted into a water reservoir during Arab rule to sustain the fortress.
