Sarek National Park

Sarek National Park is a protected area in Jokkmokk Municipality in northern Sweden, containing dozens of glaciers and several summits rising above two thousand meters. The landscape consists of broad valleys cut by rivers and surrounded by steep rock walls.

Sweden established this area as one of its first protected zones in 1909, contributing to the founding of the European nature conservation movement. The decision reflected growing interest in preserving untouched wilderness for future generations.

The Sami have herded reindeer through these valleys for centuries and gave names to mountains and rivers that describe their shapes and qualities. These terms still guide how visitors read the terrain and understand the connection between people and land.

This place demands solid experience in hiking and navigation since there are no marked trails or mountain huts. Visitors should prepare for rapid weather changes and no mobile signal, so map and compass are essential.

The delta of the Rapa River forms a branching network of waterways winding through the landscape that looks especially striking from higher ground. Photographers travel here to capture these natural patterns in the midnight light.
