Öja Church

Öja is a stone church in Gotland featuring three intricately carved Gothic portals, with its northern entrance displaying detailed sculptures of religious figures. The interior features vaulted ceilings from the 13th century and striking wall paintings.

The choir and apse were built in the 13th century, with the nave added later and the tower completed in the 14th century. This building timeline shows the gradual development of the site during the Middle Ages.

The interior walls show paintings that depict the Passion of Christ across different periods. These works reveal how the community shaped this space over many generations.

The church remains an active place of worship in the Diocese of Visby and serves as a clear landmark for orientation. Visitors can view the exterior and explore the interior to appreciate the medieval construction and decorations.

A large triumphal cross from 1275 hangs inside the church and ranks among the most important surviving medieval artworks in the region. Few visitors realize the significance of this cross when touring the interior.
