This mountain region received protected status as a nature reserve in 1970 and has maintained it since. The protection preserves the natural environment and ecological character of the area.
The name Dundret comes from the Finnish word tunturi and connects to the Sami term Váhtjerduottar, showing the different cultures that have shaped this northern region.
