Mariefred Charterhouse, Carthusian monastery in Strängnäs Municipality, Sweden
Mariefred Charterhouse is a Carthusian monastery in Strängnäs Municipality built with traditional monastic structures and stone buildings near Lake Mälaren. The remains include walls and cellars of the original complex, some of which were later incorporated into Mariefried Church.
Founded in 1493 by Archbishop Jakob Ulvsson and Bishop Kort Rogge, it received patronage from Regent Sten Sture who granted the Gripsholm estate to support its operations. The community experienced significant changes during the 16th century as the Reformation reached Sweden.
The monastery's printing operations, established in 1498, made it a center for producing and spreading religious texts throughout the region. This work gave the community a role in intellectual and spiritual life beyond its walls.
Parts of the original site remain accessible today, allowing visitors to explore sections of the walls and cellars, particularly near Mariefried Church. The terrain can be uneven in places, so comfortable footwear is helpful for getting around.
This is the only Carthusian monastery ever built in Scandinavia before the Reformation. Its existence makes it a rare testament to contemplative monastic communities in this northern region.
