Ottar's mound, Archaeological burial mound in Husby, Sweden.
Ottar's mound is a circular burial mound in Husby measuring about 37 meters across and standing 5 meters high. It rises noticeably from the flat landscape in northern Uppland.
Excavations by Sune Lindqvist in 1914 and 1916 uncovered weapons and jewelry decorated with animal patterns from the Vendel Period. These finds suggest this was the burial place of someone important from that era.
The mound is part of a larger cemetery complex with around 60 graves from the Vendel Period. These burial sites show how important such places were to early communities and how they continue to shape the landscape today.
The mound stands beside a road in Tierp municipality, making it easy to reach. Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk across or climb the mound itself.
Local tradition connects this mound to King Ottar, a figure mentioned in the Old English epic poem Beowulf. This link shows how ancient legends shape place names and landmark identities.
