Adelsö, Medieval archaeological site in Lake Mälaren, Sweden
Adelsö is an island in Lake Mälaren, west of Stockholm, in Ekerö Municipality in Sweden. It sits in a cluster of islands and is connected to the neighboring island of Munsö by a short ferry crossing.
Adelsö was a seat of royal power during the Viking Age and the medieval period, when the Lake Mälaren region was central to early Swedish history. Nearby Birka, on the adjacent island, was one of the main trading towns of northern Europe at that time.

The island is reachable by ferry from Munsö, and a visit pairs well with a trip to Birka on the neighboring island. Since the island is rural with limited facilities, visiting during warmer months makes for a more comfortable experience.
Adelsö is home to the ruins of Alsnöhus, a royal palace from the 13th century that is rarely mentioned alongside the more visited Birka site nearby. These remains are among the few physical traces of early royal presence in the Lake Mälaren region.
