Runamo, Dolerite dike formation in Ronneby Municipality, Sweden
Runamo is a dolerite dike that cuts through granite bedrock in Ronneby Municipality, extending roughly 22 meters in length. The formation displays natural fractures and surface cracks that characterize its appearance.
In the 12th century, Danish chronicler Saxo Grammaticus recorded markings on the rock, sparking centuries of debate about their origin. This early documentation made the site a focus for scholarly investigation across generations.
The formation became a center of scholarly attention because researchers long debated whether the surface marks were human-made or purely natural features. This uncertainty made the site important for testing new scientific methods in the region.
The site is accessible via marked paths that start near Bräkne-Hoby church, roughly 2.7 kilometers away. The trails are straightforward to follow and lead directly to the rock formation.
Weathering patterns in the dolerite resembled ancient runic inscriptions to earlier scholars, who believed they recorded the Battle of Brávellir. Scientific examination eventually revealed these apparent runes were simply natural formations created by geological processes.
