Lake Trummen, Freshwater lake in Växjö Municipality, Sweden
Lake Trummen is a freshwater lake within the city limits of Växjö that spans a wide area and reaches about 2.5 meters at its deepest point. A walking path of roughly 6.6 kilometers circles the shoreline and connects different points including Teleborg Castle and a nearby hospital.
The lake went through a restoration project from 1970 to 1971 when scientists removed about 60 centimeters of polluted sediment using special suction dredging techniques. This work was pioneering and showed that heavily damaged lakes could be restored.
The lake near the university serves as a gathering place where students and residents spend time outdoors throughout the year. It has become an important part of how the city's people connect with nature in their daily lives.
The lake is easy to explore on foot, with paths going all the way around the shoreline and letting you discover the area in sections. If you want to spend time by the water, you will find many access points and rest spots along the paths.
The project here was the first successful example of large-scale sediment removal to restore a lake, and it drew attention from water management experts around the world. This recognition made it a model for similar efforts elsewhere.
