Den Gyldene Freden, Traditional restaurant in Södermalm, Sweden.
Den Gyldene Freden is a restaurant housed in a 1722 building with two original dining rooms on the main floor. Stone staircases descend to cellar levels where additional dining spaces are located below.
The restaurant took its name from the Peace of Nystad in 1721, which ended conflicts among Sweden, Russia, and Denmark. This naming choice reflected the political importance of that peace agreement for the region.
The Swedish Academy has gathered here every Thursday evening since 1920 to hold discussions that shape literary decisions. Diners can sit in the same rooms where these gatherings take place.
The restaurant opens Monday through Thursday from midday to 11 PM, and Friday through Saturday until 1 AM. Lunch and dinner menus offer different options depending on when you visit.
Artist Anders Zorn purchased this establishment in 1919 after learning about its threatened closure while eating a meal here. His unexpected act of preservation saved a significant local landmark from disappearing.
