Penningby Castle

Penningby Castle is a fortress near the Edsviken inlet with stone walls, a round tower, and grounds overlooking the Baltic coastline. The structure features multiple buildings arranged around a central courtyard, displaying different construction styles from various periods.

The fortress was founded in the 1440s by noblewoman Birgitta Tordsdotter Bonde and shaped the region's early settlement history. Major renovations in the 1550s added an eastern entrance, transforming its layout and defensive capabilities.

The round salon in the sea tower displays decorative details and architectural features from the medieval and Renaissance periods. These spaces show how residents lived and worked across different eras of the castle's occupation.

Access to the grounds is available during summer months, with guided tours offered regularly throughout the season. The pathways are mostly level and easy to walk, making the site accessible to various visitors.

A local craftsman named Olof Persson Stille worked here as a millwright before emigrating to America. He became one of the first Swedish settlers in what is now Pennsylvania, creating an unexpected link between this Swedish castle and colonial North America.
