Balsberget, Nature reserve and mountain in Kristianstad Municipality, Sweden
Balsberget is a forest-covered mountain in Kristianstad Municipality that rises about 100 meters above the surrounding lowland. From its summit, you can look out over Råbelövssjön lake and the flat Kristianstad plain stretching in all directions.
Carl von Linné visited the mountain in 1749 during his journey through Scania and recorded observations about the abundant fossil deposits found here. His account showed scientific interest in the geological features of this region.
The protected area became an official nature reserve on January 12, 2006, highlighting the commitment to preserve local biodiversity and natural heritage.
Three marked hiking trails range from 2.2 to 4.5 kilometers long, each offering different views and difficulty levels through the forest and surroundings. A parking area accommodates about 35 vehicles, and barbecue spots are available for breaks.
A cave system called Balsbergsgrottan runs about 290 meters through the mountain slope and serves as a winter shelter for multiple bat species. This underground network makes this place an important refuge for these animals during the cold months.
