Blue Orange, Outdoor art installation at Vara train station, Sweden.
Blue Orange is an art installation at Vara train station in western Sweden, featuring walls painted in deep blue and five fiberglass-coated foam sculptures mounted across the roofs. The sixth sculpture stands separately nearby, creating a cohesive visual composition that transforms the entire station environment.
The installation was commissioned by the Public Art Agency Sweden and created by German artist Katharina Grosse, officially unveiling in 2012. The project transformed a simple train station into a significant cultural landmark in the region.
The name comes from a French poem by Paul Éluard about how color affects the way we see things and what we expect to find. Visitors walking through the station often pause to notice how the colors change their impression of the space itself.
The installation is visible throughout the day and easily accessible directly at Vara train station, located in western Sweden. Since it is an outdoor artwork, visitors can view it freely at any time without needing to enter the building or purchase tickets.
The artist painted the entire station in shades of blue that shift in appearance depending on the time of day and weather conditions, creating a work that never looks exactly the same twice. This changing quality makes each visit reveal different aspects of the color composition and how it interacts with natural light.
