Aschanska Villa

Aschanska Villa is a National Romantic residence in central Umeå featuring a red-painted wooden facade set on a stone foundation. The building incorporates regional architectural details from the early 1900s and now operates as a restaurant where visitors can see the historical interiors.

Architect Ragnar Östberg designed the villa in 1906 for Colonel Wilhelm Aschan during the period when Umeå was rebuilding following the city's great fire of 1888. The residence represents the new wave of construction that shaped the city's residential neighborhoods in the early 1900s.

The villa reflects Swedish National Romantic ideals through its red-painted wooden exterior and use of local materials that showcase regional craftsmanship. Its interior spaces reveal how prosperous families lived in the early 1900s and what mattered to them in their home design.

The villa formed part of a planned waterfront development along Skeppsbron and was among the first residential buildings constructed after the city's major fire. This early reshaping of the waterfront area gave Umeå its distinctive character for years to come.
