Brunkebergs hotell, Historical hotel building in central Stockholm, Sweden
Brunkebergs Hotel was a luxury residential hotel at Brunkebergstorg in the Norrmalm district featuring a striking facade decorated with copper griffins facing the square. The building contained multiple floors combining residential spaces with hotel rooms for visitors.
Construction of the building took place between 1837 and 1841, designed by architects Per Axel Nyström and Jonas Jonsson for Baron Johan Nordenfalk. The Telegraph Administration purchased it in 1924, adding an extra floor and modifying the exterior with new materials.
The building housed creative and intellectual figures of its time, serving as a residence for artists like painter Jenny Nyström. It represented a center for cultural life in 19th century Stockholm.
The location sits centrally in Stockholm and is easy to reach from major streets and squares in Norrmalm. The building is best appreciated from the square itself, where its distinctive copper griffins and facade detailing are clearly visible.
The building briefly housed the Stockholm School of Economics and its student association from 1909 to 1928 before they relocated elsewhere. This period marked an important moment when the space served as a gathering place for young academics in the city.
