Bäckaby Old Church, Medieval wooden church in Jönköping City Park, Sweden
Backaby Old Church was a wooden structure that stood in a city park and contained medieval timber elements throughout its design. The building showcased traditional construction methods and housed a simple interior typical of northern European churches from that period.
The church dates back to the 1320s and was originally constructed near Vetlanda in its early centuries. It was relocated to the city park in 1902 and operated there for nearly a century before being destroyed by fire in 2000.
This church served as an important gathering place for local families to celebrate weddings and baptisms for centuries. The building held deep meaning for people in the region who marked their life milestones within its wooden walls.
The site is now a memorial area within the park that visitors can explore freely without entrance fees. An information marker on the ground explains what once stood there and helps visitors understand the church's former presence.
The wooden components of the structure actually dated to the 1300s, preserving construction techniques that had been used for centuries. This made it one of the oldest intact wooden religious structures in the country before the fire destroyed it.
