Bååtska palatset, Office building in Stockholm, Sweden
Bååtska palatset is an office building in the heart of Stockholm, housed inside a Baroque city palace dating from the 17th century. It stands on Riddarhustorget, on the island of Stadsholmen, which forms the historical core of the city.
The palace was built in the late 17th century for the Swedish noble family Bååt and is one of the better-preserved Baroque palaces in Stockholm's old town. Over the centuries it changed hands several times before eventually being converted into offices.
Bååtska palatset stands on Riddarhustorget, one of the oldest squares in Stockholm, giving the building a very particular urban setting. Passersby can admire the heavy 17th-century stone facade, which stands in sharp contrast to the modern office use inside.
The building is located in the Gamla stan neighborhood, which is easy to reach on foot from the central metro stations. The exterior facade is visible from the public pavement at any time, but the interior is reserved for office tenants.
Although the building now houses offices, the Baroque facade with its original stone details remains almost entirely intact. This makes it one of the few noble palaces in Gamla stan that is still in daily use and has not become a museum.
