Franska värdshuset, Historical residence in Södra Djurgården, Sweden
Franska värdshuset is a residential building on Djurgården with two separate yellow wooden wings standing between Djurgårdsstaden and Rosenvik. The structure displays traditional Swedish design features characteristic of the early 1800s and occupies a position above the bridge that connects the island to Beckholmen.
Jean Baptiste Le Maire commissioned this residential building in 1808 as De Maires Wärdshus, providing accommodation for Stockholm's nobility. The structure later became connected to significant cultural moments in Swedish history.
The Swedish Artist Club held their first summer celebration at this location in 1857, gathering leading artists of the period.
The location is easy to reach and situated in a well-oriented spot between recognizable island areas. Visitors can explore the surroundings at their own pace from the nearby path and take in the setting without time pressure.
The building served as a gathering place for Swedish rowers during the 1912 Olympics, earning the nickname Roddarhemmet Ching-Ching from its residents. This distinctive name came from its proximity to the Olympic rowing course.
