E4-bron, Södertälje, Road bridge in Södertälje, Sweden
E4-bron is a road bridge in Södertälje that consists of two parallel lift bridges spanning the Södertälje Canal. The structure is roughly 450 meters long with a roadway about 13 meters wide and is designed to raise for passing vessel traffic.
The bridge opened in 1965 when the E4 motorway was built through Södertälje to bypass the city center. The lift bridge design allowed both road and water traffic to use the same canal crossing.
The bridge serves as a main link between the Södra and Viksängen neighborhoods, enabling daily movement across the canal. It functions as a key passage for local traffic patterns that shape how residents experience their city.
The bridge is remotely controlled from Lotsudden and offers a standard height clearance of about 26 meters for water traffic. When raised, this clearance extends to about 42 meters to accommodate larger vessels.
In 1990 the northern lift span suffered structural damage during operation, requiring installation of a temporary British bridge for emergency use. This provisional solution remained in place for about ten months until repairs were completed.
