Ejdern, Museum steamboat in Södertälje, Sweden
Ejdern is a museum steamboat about 22 meters long and based in Södertälje Municipality on Lake Mälaren. The vessel is preserved as a historical site and offers journeys across the lake with stops at the ancient Viking settlement of Birka.
The vessel was built in 1880 at a Gothenburg shipyard and initially served various Swedish harbors. It was stationed in Södertälje in 1906 where it has remained ever since.
The vessel represents Swedish maritime heritage and functions as a working museum that people can actually board and experience. Visitors see how passengers once traveled and witness traditional steamboat operations firsthand.
Visitors can board between May and September for journeys across the lake. It is helpful to check in advance whether sailings are available, since operations vary based on weather and season.
The vessel still operates using its original 1880 steam engine powered by coal. This makes it one of the oldest actively functioning steam-powered ships in existence.
