Kratte furnace, Iron foundry ruins in Torsåker, Sweden
Kratte furnace is a former ironworks with ruins of a blast furnace, forge, and watermill structures positioned along the northern edge of Krattdammen lake. The complex contains multiple foundations and remains scattered across the site from different periods of operation.
The ironworks started in the 1500s when local miners built a forge, and a blast furnace was added in 1672 under Isak Mackeij. This operation became a major part of the region's economy and continued for centuries.
The site reflects how iron production shaped life and work in this region for centuries. The place remains rooted in that industrial past, even though the furnace no longer operates.
The site today offers swimming and grilling facilities by the lake that are accessible year-round. Visitors can explore the historical remains while enjoying outdoor activities in a natural setting.
After iron production ceased, the site was repurposed for unexpected uses including a forestry school and an asylum center. This transformation reveals how industrial sites can take on completely new meanings and functions over time.
