Länscellfängelset i Göteborg, Former county prison in Lilla Bommen, Sweden
Länscellfängelset i Göteborg is a former county prison in Lilla Bommen with three floors and roughly 107 cells spread across a main building and two wings. The structure also housed courtrooms and medical facilities for inmates.
The prison was built in 1854 and opened in 1857 to replace an older facility on Sillgatan. The new building was part of Sweden's prison reforms during the 1800s.
The facility transformed into the Rosenborg shelter operated by the Salvation Army from 1907 until its demolition in 1972, serving the local community.
The prison was located on the grounds of the former S:t Erik bastion and was accessible from the city center. The facility was closed in 1907 when inmates were transferred to a new prison elsewhere.
In its later years the prison held more debtors than criminals, reflecting the social conditions of that time. This shows how debt collection was a pressing issue in 19th-century society.
