Långängen-Elfvik nature reserve, Nature reserve in Lidingö, Sweden
Långängen-Elfvik is a nature reserve on Lidingö with forests, lakes, coastal sections, grasslands, and farmland spread across the central and eastern parts of the island. The terrain includes dense coniferous forests, older deciduous stands, and open landscapes with water bodies of varying sizes.
The area was designated as a protected zone in 1981 with an early expansion in 1986. A major expansion came in 2006, with further protective measures added in 2023.
The name comes from the long lakes and coastal features that shape the landscape. You can see traditional grazing lands here that have been maintained for generations and define the character of this part of Lidingö.
The reserve is accessible by public transportation on Lidingö, with marked walking paths connecting different sections. The paths are open to foot traffic and pass through various landscape types, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
The area supports a significant migratory bird population that moves seasonally between the lakes and coastal areas. The wetlands and open water surfaces serve as important rest stops during bird migration periods.
