PK-huset, Commercial building in Norrmalm, Stockholm, Sweden
PK-huset is a 24-story office and commercial building at the corner of Hamngatan and Norrlandsgatan in Norrmalm, Stockholm, clad in reddish Älvdals sandstone. The ground floor holds retail units and a covered arcade that links the building directly to the neighboring Nordiska Kompaniet department store.
The building was completed in 1974 as the headquarters of Post- och Kreditbanken, which is the origin of the PK initials in its name. A major renovation in 2008 reshaped the interior and added more office space in the upper floors.
Street Style, Sweden's first skateboard shop, has operated inside the building since the 1980s and drew young people from across Stockholm to this central address. Walking through the arcade today, you still find a mix of everyday shops and niche retailers that give the place a different feel from a standard office block.
The building stands at the heart of Norrmalm and is within easy walking distance of three metro stations and Stockholm Central. Visiting on a weekday during the day gives the best chance of finding all the shops in the arcade open.
The reddish sandstone covering the facade comes from Älvdalen in the Swedish province of Dalarna, a quarry that supplied stone for several of Stockholm's notable buildings. This gives the tower a warm tone that stands out against the grey concrete structures around it.
