NK clock, Neon clock at Nordiska Kompaniet department store, Stockholm, Sweden
The NK clock is a large timepiece mounted on the roof of the Nordiska Kompaniet department store with a diameter of 7 meters. The display is divided into two halves: one side shows the green NK logo while the other side features a red clock face.
The clock was installed in 1939 on the Stockholm Telephone Tower and relocated to the NK building's roof in 1964 following a fire. Despite the destruction of the original structure, the timepiece has continued to function reliably.
The green NK logo and red clock face serve as a daily reference point for people moving through Stockholm's center, helping them navigate and orient themselves. Passersby naturally glance upward at this familiar landmark as they go about their day.
The timepiece rotates continuously and sits approximately 87 meters above street level, making it visible from many parts of the center. Visitors should take time on clear days to view it from different vantage points.
The entire device weighs approximately 4 tons and survived a devastating fire in 1952 that severely damaged the original telephone tower. Despite the extreme heat and destruction surrounding it, the timepiece remained operational and was later relocated to its new home.
