Residenset, Malmö, Administrative building and castle at Stortorget, Malmö, Sweden
Residenset is an administrative building and former stately home at Stortorget with Renaissance and Baroque elements throughout its facade. The structure combines two connected sections with distinct architectural features that reflect different periods of construction and modification.
The building was constructed in the late 1500s and became the governor's residence of Skane following the 1658 Peace of Roskilde. This transition marked an important shift in its role from private residence to official seat of regional government.
The building serves as the everyday seat of regional government and an official residence where important guests are received. Through its continued use, it represents how administrative work and formal representation have been intertwined in one location for generations.
The building can be viewed from the outside at Stortorget and offers a classic Malmo city center experience. It is easily accessible on foot and provides good views of the historic architecture from multiple sides of the square.
King Charles XV spent his final hours in this building and died here on September 18, 1872. This event made the location a place of great significance in Swedish royal history.
