Palaestra et Odeum, University concert hall and meeting venue in Lund, Sweden
Palaestra et Odeum is a university building with a large auditorium and several rehearsal and teaching rooms in a late 19th-century structure facing University Square. It provides music instruction facilities, a music library, and spaces for various university events throughout the academic year.
Architect Helgo Zettervall designed this building in 1883, incorporating elements from a 1750s orangery that previously occupied the site. The structure was built during a period of major expansion of Lund University in the 19th century.
The Kapellsalen hosts regular performances by the Academic Orchestra of Lund University and is regularly used for chamber music concerts. This venue plays a central role in the musical and artistic life of the university.
The building is located at Paradisgatan 4 directly at University Square, making it easy to reach on foot. When planned renovations begin in 2025, major events will be temporarily relocated to other venues.
The building structure preserves remains and design features from an older orangery, reflecting the site's connection to earlier university gardens. These hidden architectural layers make each visit a discovery of different historical periods layered into the walls.
