Holy Cross Chapel

The Holy Cross Chapel is the largest ceremonial space within Skogskyrkogården cemetery, distinguished by white walls and contemporary architectural design. The building accommodates around 300 people and includes modern features such as hearing assistance and an electric piano.

Renowned architect Gunnar Asplund designed the chapel, which opened in 1940 as part of a newly established cemetery complex. The project represented an innovative vision for a modern burial ground.

The chapel houses artwork by a Swedish artist from the mid-twentieth century that reflects religious and artistic expression of that era. The interior creates a personal sense of reverence that extends beyond formal ceremonies.

The building offers wheelchair access, designated parking, and hearing assistance for visitors who need support. It is advisable to check opening times before visiting, as this remains an active ceremonial space.

Following ceremonies, flowers are not placed inside the building, a practice rooted in local burial traditions. This custom differs from typical Western funeral spaces and reflects Swedish customs.
