Stora Markie, Manor house in Trelleborg Municipality, Sweden.
Stora Markie is a manor house in Trelleborg Municipality with brick construction, wings, and grounds set on fertile plains. The Markiehage estate was built between 1875 and 1876 as a substantial castle structure with formal park gardens.
The estate belonged to King Waldemar Atterdag in the 14th century and later passed through noble families including Gyllenstierna, Bille, and Stiernblad. A major fire destroyed the original building, after which the current main structure was rebuilt in 1926.
The name Markiehage reflects Swedish noble traditions and shapes the formal design of its park grounds. The garden layout still shows the classical characteristics typical of estates built during that period.
The grounds are open for visitors to explore both the buildings and the park during visiting hours. Wear comfortable shoes as the estate has extensive paths throughout the formal gardens and across the open terrain.
In 1971 the estate shifted from being a hereditary entailed property of the Stiernblad family to a corporate entity owned by Erik Haqvin and Karl Vilhelm Stiernblad. This change marked a turning point in how the property was managed and used.
