Stora Ekebergs sanatorium is an early 20th-century building with large windows, spacious verandas, and elevated positioning to maximize light and airflow through its medical wings. The architecture reflects the period belief that fresh air and daylight were essential to treating lung disease.
Designed by architect Ernst Stenhammar, the facility opened in 1918 with 180 beds as a specialized lung treatment center. Its capacity expanded significantly over the following decades as demand for treatment beds grew.
The site served as a healing refuge for concentration camp survivors in the 1940s, offering them medical care when they needed it most. This chapter became central to how the place was remembered by the community.
