Sten Sturemonumentet

Sten Sturemonumentet is a bronze monument on Kronåsen hill in Uppsala that features multiple sculptural groups showing a medieval leader and his soldiers. The figures stand prominently on the hillside and can be seen across much of the city.

Artist Carl Milles created this monument in the 1920s to honor Sten Sture the Elder, an influential regent from the 15th and early 16th centuries. The work emerged during a period when Sweden looked back to its medieval past.

The monument depicts Sten Sture as a military leader, and locals see it as a symbol of Swedish resistance during medieval times. The bronze figures shape how people on the hill experience this connection to the country's past.

Completing the monument was a major undertaking that required moving heavy granite blocks and bronze sections over considerable distances. This logistical challenge made the project a noteworthy technical achievement of the early 20th century.
