Terrasstrapporna

Terrasstrapporna is a monumental granite staircase with two sections that connects different elevations of the city while blending multiple architectural approaches. The lower portion displays baroque-influenced details, while the upper section features towers and patterns inspired by medieval design.

The idea for connecting two urban areas emerged in 1893 as a proposal to the city council, leading to construction work carried out between 1900 and 1903. This marked a significant infrastructure development for Helsingborg during that period.

The staircase mixes different architectural styles that blend together as you climb, with lower sections showing baroque details and upper parts echoing medieval design through their towers and patterns. Walking up reveals how these contrasts reflect different periods of taste in the city's development.

It helps to know that an elevator is available in the northern tower, operated by a conductor, and serves many visitors daily. This provides an alternative to climbing the stairs, particularly useful for those with mobility concerns or on warm days.

Small waterfalls flow through archways in the upper facade, creating a subtle acoustic feature as water moves across the stone steps. The towers also display regular patterns of openings that mimic historical scaffolding marks, giving the structure an authentic aged appearance.
