Mangart, Mountain peak in Julian Alps, Italy and Slovenia

Mangart is a mountain summit in the Julian Alps straddling the Slovenia-Italy border and rises to 2,677 meters. The north face extends roughly 3 kilometers across and the slopes descend into Koritnica Valley on one side and the Mangart Lakes valley on the other.

The peak was first documented as climbed in 1794 by Franz von Hohenwart, marking early mountaineering activity in the area. The north wall later attracted experienced climbers and was successfully navigated in 1906 by Leuchs and Schulze.

The name derives from Old High German origins tied to early settlement in the region. Hikers from both nations use different routes to the summit, reflecting the mountain's role as a shared landmark.

The road to Mangart Saddle reaches 2,072 meters and is Slovenia's highest road, allowing vehicle access partway up. From this point, visitors can continue on foot to the summit or explore alternative routes by hiking.

Two distinct routes lead to the summit: a technical climbing path through Slovenia and a via ferrata trail that crosses into Italian terrain. This split reflects the mountain's position between two nations.
