Planica Nordic Center is a facility for cross-country skiing and ski jumping located in Rateče. It features 7 kilometers of local trails, with additional routes connecting to Kranjska Gora and Tamar that extend the total skiing distance to 40 kilometers.
The facility developed as a major center for Nordic sports in the Rateče region. In 2015, it was officially recognized as registered immobile cultural heritage of Slovenia, acknowledging its role in the country's sports development.
The center hosts major winter competitions that bring together ski jumpers and cross-country skiers from around the world. These events create an international gathering that shapes how local communities experience the winter season.
The center features an underground ski tunnel spanning three levels that allows year-round training with either natural or artificial snow. This tunnel maintains a temperature of about minus 2 degrees Celsius throughout the year.
The site sits at the border junction where Slovenia, Italy, and Austria meet, making it a rare meeting point for athletes from three countries. Its elevation of around 1,100 meters creates naturally favorable conditions for winter sports in this geographically distinctive location.
