Kacenštajn Castle

Kacenštajn Castle is a medieval fortress in Begunje na Gorenjskom featuring a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural styles. A tree-lined avenue of chestnuts leads visitors to the main building, which now serves educational and cultural functions.

The castle was first recorded in 1428 and evolved through centuries of occupation and modification. It became a Gestapo prison during World War II, marking it as a site of significant tragedy.

The castle houses a museum dedicated to preserving memories of wartime imprisonment and the personal stories of those held within its walls. Visitors can walk through spaces that bear witness to these experiences.

The site is easily accessible from Highway 638 and offers guided tours for visitors. Allow sufficient time to explore both the exterior grounds and the interior exhibitions.

A Baroque garden on the grounds has been transformed into a functional vegetable garden, showing creative reuse of the historic space. This blend of heritage with contemporary growing practices is noteworthy.
