Vrtoglavica Cave, Cave system in Kanin Mountains, Slovenia.
Vrtoglavica Cave is a cave system in the Kanin Mountains that descends vertically for over 603 meters into the earth. It forms part of an extensive karst network spreading beneath the western Julian Alps region.
Italian speleologists first discovered this cave system in 1996, marking the beginning of its scientific documentation. A joint Slovenian-Italian team reached the bottom that October, opening the site to further international research.
The cave draws researchers from both sides of the Slovenian-Italian border, fostering exchange of knowledge about underground systems. Visitors can observe how this cross-border scientific work shapes modern exploration efforts.
The cave sits at 1,900 meters elevation and requires advanced climbing skills, specialized equipment, and professional guidance for any exploration. Access is possible year-round, but extreme conditions make proper preparation essential.
Inside the cave flows one of the world's tallest underground waterfalls, with water plunging between 400 and 440 meters through the main shaft. This dramatic feature results from the subterranean river system moving through the mountain.
