Church of the Ascension of Christ, Parish church in Bogojina, Slovenia.
The Church of the Ascension of Christ in Bogojina is a parish church in the Municipality of Moravske Toplice, in northeastern Slovenia, recognized as a monument of local significance. A cylindrical tower rises above the entrance, and the building connects an older medieval core with a newer section added in the early 20th century.
The church traces its origins to the 14th century, when a first place of worship was built in Bogojina. Major reconstruction work carried out in 1924 and 1925, designed by the Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik, gave the building the form it has today.
The name refers to the Ascension of Christ, a feast that holds a central place in Catholic life in this part of Slovenia. Inside, handmade ceramic pieces created by craftspeople from the Prekmurje region give the interior a local character that sets it apart from other rural churches.
The church is open throughout the year and belongs to the Diocese of Murska Sobota. Visiting outside of service times allows you to look around the interior at your own pace without disrupting the parish community.
Plečnik chose not to demolish the old medieval church but to keep it as an entrance hall for the new building. This means the visitor passes through a space from the 14th century before stepping into the part designed in the 20th century.
