Reichenburg Castle, Medieval castle in Brestanica, Slovenia.
Reichenburg Castle is a hilltop fortress at the point where the Brestanica Creek meets the Sava River, near the town of Brestanica in Slovenia. It has thick stone walls and defensive towers, and today it houses museum collections, art exhibitions, a restaurant, and a café.
The castle was first recorded in 895, making it the oldest documented fortress in Slovenia. Major rebuilding was carried out between 1131 and 1147 under Bishop Konrad of Salzburg, who reinforced and expanded the site.
The Trappist monks who once lived here made chocolate and liqueur within the castle walls, which was rare for a religious community at the time. Traces of this craft tradition can still be seen in the museum rooms inside the castle.
The castle can be reached on foot and the paths through its different areas are easy to follow. A shop, a restaurant, and a café are all on site, so it is worth planning enough time to explore at a relaxed pace.
During World War II, German occupiers used the castle as a deportation center for thousands of Slovenes sent to camps elsewhere. After the war it served as a women's prison before eventually opening to the public as a cultural venue.
