Reichenburg Castle, Medieval castle in Brestanica, Slovenia.
Reichenburg Castle is a fortress on a hilltop at the confluence of the Sava River and Brestanica Creek near Brestanica. The structure features thick stone walls, defensive towers, and now houses museum collections, art exhibitions, a restaurant, and a café.
The fortress was first documented in 895 and stands as Slovenia's oldest recorded castle. Bishop Konrad of Salzburg undertook major rebuilding and fortification work between 1131 and 1147.
The castle is tied to Trappist monastic tradition, with monks once producing chocolate and liqueur within its walls. Today visitors encounter these craft legacies through museum displays and the castle's continued cultural programs.
The castle is easily reached on foot and offers clear pathways through its different visitor areas. With a shop, restaurant, and café on the grounds, visitors can comfortably spend several hours exploring and enjoying refreshments.
During World War II, German occupiers converted the castle into a deportation center processing thousands of Slovenes. After the war it functioned as a women's prison before eventually becoming the cultural institution it is today.
