Starina reservoir, Drinking water reservoir in Stakčín, Slovakia
Starina Reservoir is a drinking water storage facility in eastern Slovakia situated within Poloniny National Park. The water body holds a substantial volume behind a tall dam structure that controls the water level and flow.
Construction took place between 1981 and 1988 as part of a major water infrastructure project for eastern Slovakia. The project necessitated the relocation of thousands of residents from several villages that were flooded by the new water body.
The reservoir area connects to regional heritage through nearby landmarks like the Wooden Greek Catholic Church in Jalová and the Classicist Mansion in Snina.
Access to the water is strictly limited because it serves as a drinking water source, and swimming is not permitted. Visitors should respect the protection measures and view the facility from designated areas.
The reservoir supplies water across a large geographic area through an extensive pipeline network that stretches westward over considerable distance. This distribution system makes it a critical part of infrastructure serving multiple eastern cities.
