Muráň Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Revúca District, Slovakia
Muráň Castle is a stone fortress in ruins, set on Cigánka cliff in the Revúca District of Slovakia. The site spreads across a rocky slope and still shows remains of residential buildings and layered defensive walls on several levels.
The castle was first recorded in 1271 and served for centuries as a key military point in the region. It changed hands several times through conflict and negotiation before falling into the state of ruin seen today.
Martin Bošňák wrote The Song About The Castle of Muráň, which tells the story of a siege through traditional Slovak verses. Visitors who know the poem often find it easier to picture what life and conflict looked like within these walls.
The walk up from Muráň village follows marked trails and takes around two hours at a relaxed pace. Good footwear is strongly advised since the path gets steep and the ground around the ruins is uneven.
Muráň Castle is one of the highest-placed castle ruins in Slovakia, sitting well above the surrounding forests. On a clear day, the upper platform offers a wide view over the Muráň plateau that rewards the climb on its own.
