Church of Holy Spirit

The Church of Holy Spirit is a church building in Žehra with a two-nave structure and a square presbytery located on a hilltop above the village. The building combines late-Romanesque and early-Gothic architectural elements and features a simple exterior.

Construction of the church began in 1245 and lasted about 30 years, resulting in a blend of late-Romanesque and early-Gothic styles. The original structure has been preserved over the centuries and continues to define the character of the location today.

The interior walls display medieval frescoes from the 13th to 15th century that tell religious stories through painted images. These artworks shape the character of the church space and give visitors a sense of the artistic traditions of that era.

The building sits on a hilltop above the village and requires a short walk from the lower areas. Visitors should expect simple pathways and possible uneven terrain, and wearing appropriate footwear is recommended.

After plague outbreaks in the mid-17th century, the interior was covered with lime plaster, which preserved the medieval frescoes underneath this protective layer. This accidental conservation method allowed the discovery and restoration of these valuable artworks in modern times.
