Church of Holy Spirit

The Church of Holy Spirit features a two-nave structure with a square presbytery and stands at 426 meters above sea level on a mount above Žehra village.

Construction of the church began in 1245 by Count Johann of Žehra and took 30 years to complete, resulting in a combination of late-Romanesque and early-Gothic architectural styles.

The interior walls display medieval frescoes created between the 13th and 15th centuries, including the Tree of Life painting that divides Old and New Testament narratives.

Visitors can access the church Monday through Friday from 10:00 to 16:00 and Saturday from 14:00 to 17:00, with admission fees of 1.70€ for adults.

The church walls were covered with lime plaster after plague outbreaks in 1644 and 1645, which inadvertently preserved the medieval frescoes for centuries.
