Bakabusi Nengre, Maroon community in central Suriname.
Bakabusi Nengre is a Maroon community in central Suriname with settlements scattered across Pikin Maasi, Dreypada, and areas that developed around bauxite mining sites. Members live near the Suriname River and across several plantation regions in the interior.
The community originated between 1740 and 1863 in the swamps around Surnau Creek, forming as a resistance group against colonial authorities. These remote wetlands provided shelter during a period of significant upheaval and establishment.
The community holds gran krutu gatherings at Plantation Rorac to discuss leadership appointments and maintain their traditional decision-making processes through tribal councils.
The community is spread across multiple scattered locations, meaning there is no single central point accessible to visitors without local guidance. Access requires preparation and respect for the structure and traditions of these communally organized settlements.
The last granman or leader, Johannes Babel, served until 1917, after which the leadership position remained unfilled for many decades. This extended vacancy significantly shaped the community's organizational structure and continuity.
