Palmyra, Archaeological site in Tadmur, Syria

The ruins contain the Temple of Bel, monumental arches, colonnaded streets, tombs, and ancient structures spread across a desert landscape in central Syria.

The city reached its peak in 260 CE when King Odaenathus defeated Persian Emperor Shapur I, establishing Palmyra as a regional power center.

The architectural elements merge classical Roman designs with Persian influences, reflecting the multicultural nature of this ancient trade center.

The archaeological site extends over several kilometers, requiring at least four hours to explore the main structures and monuments of the ancient city.

Queen Zenobia ruled this desert metropolis, establishing an independent empire that controlled territories from Egypt to Asia Minor in the third century.
