During medieval times, this caravanserai served as a vital trading post along the Silk Road, connecting merchants from Asia and Europe through Aleppo.
The building housed 43 stores specializing in textile trade, particularly silk, and later became the location of the Iranian consulate until 1919.
The caravanserai contains multiple entrances connecting to the surrounding ancient city streets, making it accessible from different parts of the market district.
The structure combines the functions of a marketplace and accommodation facility, with separate areas for storing goods and housing traveling merchants.
