Dederiyeh Cave

Dederiyeh Cave is a limestone cavern featuring a deep chamber that opens from a main entrance with a natural chimney in the rear section. The interior space extends substantially into the mountainside, creating different zones that were occupied by early humans.

Archaeological work beginning in 1987 uncovered evidence of early human habitation from the Middle Paleolithic period. Remains found at the site date back more than 100,000 years.

The cave contains numerous Middle Paleolithic artifacts and animal fossils, providing insights into Neanderthal hunting practices and daily activities.

The site sits on a slope in a remote mountainous area requiring sturdy footwear and careful navigation. Visitors should plan ahead as services and facilities nearby are limited.

The site yielded remains of fifteen Neanderthal individuals, with more than half being children, making it the largest collection in the northern Levant.
