Al-Mushannaf, Roman temple ruins in Al-Suwayda District, Syria
The archaeological complex features a first-century BC temple constructed entirely from black basalt rocks, standing on a 13.45 by 9.6-meter podium.
Known as Nela during the Roman Empire, the site contains a temple dedicated to Zeus and Athena, built during the reign of Herodian king Agrippa I.
The temple structure demonstrates Roman architectural techniques through its ornate capitals, entablature, and stone construction methods without binding materials.
The archaeological site sits at 1,400 meters elevation, with coordinates at 32.742778°N latitude and 36.774444°E longitude in southern Syria.
An artificial pool surrounds the rectangular temenos walls, creating a distinctive water feature that enhanced the temple's ceremonial setting.
