Lion of Al-lāt, Limestone statue in Palmyra, Syria

The limestone statue stands 350 centimeters tall and features a powerful lion figure protecting a crouching gazelle between its paws.

Polish archaeologists discovered the statue in 1977, finding it broken into pieces that had been used as foundation stones in other buildings.

The inscription on the left paw mentions the goddess Al-lat and contains a message against bloodshed within the sanctuary grounds.

The statue currently resides in the National Museum of Damascus following a complete restoration completed in October 2017.

The lion statue incorporates distinct artistic elements, including spiral eyes and thick, angular whiskers swept along its cheekbones.
