Thanon Patpong, Nightlife district in Bang Rak, Thailand.
Thanon Patpong is a thoroughfare in Bang Rak that becomes a pedestrian zone with market stalls in the evening. Two adjacent side streets run parallel to the main axis and together form the core of the nighttime commercial district.
The land belonged to a Chinese merchant family from the 1940s onward, who released parts of it for development. Growth followed in the 1960s and 1970s with the arrival of American military personnel during the Vietnam War.
The street takes its name from a Sino-Thai merchant family and today serves as a meeting point for many different social groups. Vendors speak Thai, English, and Chinese, reflecting the multilingual trading culture of the area.
The two main stations, Sala Daeng and Silom, are within walking distance and provide connections to the elevated and subway networks. Those wishing to visit the market should come after nightfall, as the stalls are only set up then.
In the narrow alleys between the stalls, you occasionally find small food carts preparing local dishes while tourists pass by clothing stands. Some vendors sell handmade souvenirs next to industrially manufactured products, which makes the character of the market diverse.
