Thung Yai is an administrative district in the western part of Nakhon Si Thammarat province, covering a large rural area with several sub-districts. The territory is shaped by river systems and offers mainly space for farming activities and small communities.
The region started as a minor administrative area in the early 20th century and went through name changes over the decades. It eventually gained full district status under its current name in the mid-20th century.
The district maintains strong agricultural traditions through its seven tambon administrative organizations, which coordinate local community development and resource management.
The area connects to neighboring regions through a local road network and is best explored independently. The best time to visit is during the dry season when roads are easily passable and farming activity is most visible.
The district records show a steady population increase from 64,087 residents in 2000 to 74,317 in 2016, reflecting its growing administrative importance.
